This Friday the 28th October is a public holiday. It’s the day the Queen opens CHOGM in Perth. It’s also the last Friday of the month, so to celebrate let’s meet up to hang zeppelins, fly kites and make origami! Please bring along kites if you have them and join in the fun. There will be paper, chalk and zeppelins available for you! Also tea! Very civilized.

12.00pm - 1:00pm The Perth Cultural Centre, outside the State Library, near the Licorice Allsort Sculptures.

Please feel free to forward this on!

September’s Last in Perth was a windy affair between friends. There were some new faces, but few passers by. We played Jenga and giant Snakes and Ladders in front of the Library where apparently an Anime convention was taking place. This dissolved into a wild game of marbles that involved cheering, pavement folly and chalk rings on the ground. Sarv whipped everyone! To end the night we folded little paper cranes in the dark on new lovely paper all the way from Japan. Some of us decided that to top this months Last in Perth off, we would go to dinner together. We went to Mela Indian Restaurant on William Street to enjoy some tasty dahl and curry. Dinner as a group might become a nice standing thing that those who are free can do on a Friday night after the event. Nothing like new people, new places and something good to eat to start of a new weekend and a new month!

This Friday the 30th September is the last Friday of the month, so we’re going to meet up in Perth for games and origami! Please bring along some games and join in the fun! There will also be origami paper available for making all sorts of cute creatures if that’s something you’d prefer.

August’s Last in Perth was on the chilly side but also really well received.

We built a new wetland on the steps in front of the State Library, remembering the way the place used to look. There were rapids, fish and reeds, a little girl drew a veggie patch in there and there were even little men swimming in the water. Half way through the evening the wetland was scattered with paper boats and cranes of all sizes. Towards the end though, all manner or creatures were being created. Godzilla fighting some sumo wrestlers, crocodiles, many different animals, captains of ships and squirrels in trees. We also had some exchange students come and write in their language what the words already written on the pavement meant. We had teachers inspired to teach origami in their classes and people who were out for a quiet night joining in for 20mins for something new to do. It was fun guys! Thanks for coming down and making it awesome! Next month… extreme marbles!!!

This Friday the 26th August is the last Friday of the month, let's meet up in Perth and make our own wetland! There will be chalk available for designing a waterfall down the stairs at the cultural centre as well as origami paper for cranes, boats, frogs and anything else you would like to populate the waterfall wetland with.

5pm - 6:30pm The Perth Cultural Centre, outside the State Library, near the Licorice Allsort Sculptures.

As always feel free to forward this any old how.

Well this Friday is the last Friday of the month! Let's meet up in Perth and make it a bit more colourful. I will bring chalk and tennis balls, you just need to bring yourselves and a little sense of adventure... oh and maybe some childhood recollection of drawing on the pavement, or playing Four Square / Handball.

Friday’s Last in Perth was short, sharp and fun.

Over the course of an hour friends and strangers alike stopped for a quick game of handball/foursquare, hopscotch, pavement drawing or a conversation. We had artists and armatures, people who had never heard of foursquare, people waiting for friends or passing through all getting in on the action. In celebration of Wicked coming to Perth, I myself attempted a witch flying over a moon. Robyn kept thinking it was a jellyfish. Another girl drew a beautiful tree reaching out across the pavement with other contributing falling leaves.
After a successful hour of laughs the great Friday night storm hit and we ran for cover at the State Library watching the lightening display and the whirling leaves. In moments, every trace that we had been there was removed.

Scuttling off in the rain with coats, umbrella’s and big smiles for dinner or another adventure, people departed having had a fun moment in their city.

Well this Friday is the last Friday of June! I'm thinking chalk drawing. I found two old tennis balls while I was tidying up, and I fancy a game of four square. Can anyone remember the rules? I reckon a bit of hopscotch would keep up warm too! And what about a giant and complex rainbow chalk drawing of stick men and zeppelin?

So, the last Friday is only the week after this one. That's pretty soon.
I wish we had like a bucket of slinkies and then we could set them loose down the stairs from the library to PICA.
Do you think the cultural centre is a good spot for plastic bag kite flying?
How cool would it be to do open-air ballroom dancing classes?
Well that's what I'm thinking now.

May's Last in Perth was full of stockings, jumpers and boats in the water. The Wetland was bustling with activity given the WAMI awards were happening over the weekend, and we were even filmed in the background for the 7pm Project! Happy Birthday to Sarv who chose Last in Perth as her pre-birthday fun event. We had a lot of people come over after work and learn to make origami boats to sail in the water, children, tourists, people passing by and old friends. Some of the more ambitious among us made origami ducks and frogs to hide in the reeds of the Wetland and the following day the colourful displays were still in place. People drank coffee and watched the bands play as little children marvelled at sunken boats and picked up some for their own. It was a lovely event and thank you all to those who made it.

Hi everyone,

It’s come around very quickly again; the last Friday of the month!

Given the success and fun of the boats in the wetland last month we're excited to hold it again as this months event.

When: 5pm - 6.30pm Friday 27 May 2011 (please note the new post-work time!!!)
Where: The Re-invented Wetlands (the old water feature next to the State Art Gallery) The Cultural Centre Perth, Western Australia

Your friends, family or workmates are welcome. There are plenty of places to go onto after for food, drinks, music or whatever else you want to do with your Friday evening! Remember it's WAMI weekend so there is lots of entertainment on!

It might be a bit nippy so be sure to bring jackets and if you like bright beanies, stocking, umbrellas and scarves.

Cheers Ness and Robyn

Origami and water, everyone was into it Friday after work in Perth. There was a family of self proclaimed bogans fresh from the ACDC exhibition making black origami boats. A passing couple stopped to prepare a flotilla of pink paper boats. Another father and son team got stuck into the instructions. The usual crew devoured the coloured paper with astonishing enthusiasm. There were boat races and boat launches, boats with wings, boats with keels, waterlilies and frogs. Most importantly of all there were a bunch of people getting together, helping strangers and friends with complex reverse valley folds and having a laugh in one of our adorably odd urban locations. Although a few ships sunk, only one person fell in. Thanks to everyone who came along. I declare the event a roaring success and I'd love to do it all again this month. xr

Sorry it's been so long between updates. I've been away and started a new job and it's all gotten on top of me.

I am pleased to say that in my absence, the Wetlands Paper Boats seemed to be a roaring success. I love all the little pictures that have been coming through of people building little boats and sailing them in the wetland. I am hoping to get a few words from Robyn about the event but I think she did an amazing job and therefore we are going to do it again! Perhaps with a different twist, we'll see. At any rate, keep your eyes peeled for more updates about the new event to come.

Hey everyone,

It’s that time of the month again!

When: 5pm - 7pm Friday 29 April 2011 (please note the new post-work time!!!)
Where: The Re-invented Wetlands (the old water feature next to the State Art Gallery) The Cultural Centre Perth, Western Australia

A couple of weeks ago I sat on the edge of a canal and made a little boat out of debris. It floated a little way before giving in to wind, water and shoddy construction. It was really fun. Let’s play in the city next Friday after work. Let’s make tiny temporary things and dip our fingers into water. - Robyn

Your friends, family or workmates are welcome. There are plenty of places to go onto after for food or drinks or whatever else you want to do with your Friday evening!

Robyn will be running this event herself as I will be away on holiday, so please take lots of photos and treat her well.

Cheers Ness (in absentee) and Robyn

Friday bowling last month was a lovely quiet display. We had a small group of people come and eat lunch together from around the city and then partake in a couple of quick games of ten pin bowling.

If nothing else, the bowling set became an attraction with people coming past and taking a few photos and onlookers smiling at the little game that was being played.

It was nice to see the space used for something a little different and I think that the bowls would compliment something like hacky sack and foursquare in Forest Chase; much more room and much more diversity in the way of games.

At any rate it was a lovely way to spend lunch time.

Robyn is now back from her travels with new, exciting ideas for future events. She will be running the next lunch time event as I head off on a short trip of my own.

Please feel free to make suggestions of things you’d like to do for events and places you’d like to go. Until next time!

Here's a lovely little article about a few different things that people are doing to activate space around the world. It ties in nicely, I think, with what we would like to achieve with this little event and with other events that we would hold in the future.

Welcome to another little blogging space for the Perth based event; Last in Perth.

Every month, on the last Friday, we like to do something different with our lunchtime. Sometimes this means blowing giant bubbles while sharing cake with onlookers. Sometimes it's playing a good old game of Hungry Hippos with our workmates. Sometimes it's teaching people in the Urban Orchard how to fold paper cranes.

We'd like to spread the word and have more people who are interested in these events come along. Or maybe people who are interested and want to make suggestions to post. It doesn't matter if you live in Perth or not, we'd love to hear from you and share stories and ideas.

We hope this space will be full of photos, links, and reviews from our events, but also that it will be a space to talk about other great space activation projects going on in Perth and around the world, so please, feel free to comment with links and photos.

We'll do our best to keep bringing you tiny snipets from the space activation world, but more importantly, to show our love for our city.
